Hi Ramesh,

In general the 1840 business strike rupees are not considered “rare”. However the non-business strikes like the proofs and restrikes are relatively rare today due to its demand. Amongst the 1840 Rupee business strikes the mule coin which has an obverse of the divided legend, WW raised on truncation with the Reverse of 25 berries is considered rare. So look out for it!

Krause lists  the 1892 C incuse rupee with a mintage of just 32,455. Is this correct? I see a lot available and selling for the price of a common date British rupee.

Hello and Greetings to all!

After following this blog, here is my opinion. Since I am commenting on rare coins, I think we should talk about "mintage rarity" and "grade rarity" separately. I know the latter is not much of an issue currently with most Indian collectors, but as more and more people are pursuing this hobby (or just simply investing), the premium for some of the highest grade of even common (and rarer) dates, mints, and denominations will soon become apparent. Yes U R absolutely right! Grading IS subjective. But top-tier TPG (NGC / PCGS) grades are usually quite rigid and consistent. Personally I think, one should also separate "resrtikes" from "originals" for determining rarity. And then there are the "patterns" to complicate things further! Welcome to Indian numismatics my dear friends and collectors.

My two-cents worth.....

hello Basheer, most of the one rupee coins below 1939 are priced in terms of 1-2k ,unless its an UNC or UNC like in which case u can expect something more , those above 1939 are not pure silver, they are in the range of few hundreds, 1939 is a special coin, last known global auction was sold  for approx 3-4 lakh rupees!!!
